Newhaven Local Area Transport Strategy

The Newhaven Local Area Transport Strategy (LATS) sets out the framework for transport investment in the town until 2015. A set of key objectives has been identified, from which the following transport proposals have been developed:

  • further improvements for pedestrians including more directional signs in and around the town centre
  • a cycling audit of Newhaven to identify a route network linking residential areas to key places such as schools, shopping, public transport and local attractions
  • a review of on-street parking controls
  • schemes to improve crash statistics at specific road junctions and sites
  • working with the developers of Railway Quay on a possible transport interchange on land next to Newhaven Town Station
  • working with the rail operator to identify improvements to Newhaven Town and Harbour Stations
  • working with local business and schools to develop school and work-place travel plans
  • working with the developers of Eastside Business Park and the Port to put in place the Port Access Road
  • a feasibility study for a new road link between Brighton Road and residential areas to the south, to relieve pressure on Fort Road and the Ring Road.

We have developed the Newhaven LATS in partnership with Newhaven Town and Lewes District Councils and the Newhaven Strategic Network to carry out improvements under the ‘Small Towns Package’ of our Local Transport Plan.
