Planning applications and enforcement
We are responsible for making decisions about minerals extraction, waste management and developments such as schools, libraries and roads. Most day-to-day planning applications, including building new homes or offices and house extensions, are decided by borough and district councils.

The planning system
The government has made changes to the planning system through the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004. Find out about planning from national to local levels and changeover arrangements to the new system.
Waste and Minerals Plans
Under the new planning system the Minerals Local Plan and the Waste Local Plan will be replaced with Waste and Minerals Development Plan Documents as part of a Waste and Minerals Development Framework.
South East Plan
The long-term strategy for future development in the South East region, prepared by the South East England Regional Assembly (SEERA). In May 2010, regional plans were abolished under the new government.

Development Plan Index
The Development Plan Index provides summary details of all development plans relating to local authority areas in East Sussex.
Structure Plan
The Structure Plan was largely replaced by the South East Plan. It is available to download for historical reference. Under the new government, the South East Plan has also been abolished.
